To undo a knot

Every moment is precious. The opportunities to learn are endless. Take care to appreciate even the simplest of things.

I have a story for you from my own life.

I once had a friend whom I was not going to see anymore. I was going away, and they were staying. I could see how much this troubled them, so I asked what was the matter.

"You are leaving and I am staying!" said the friend. "I will miss you. I can always be myself when I am with you."

No words could provide relief. No intellectual answer can satisfy the heart. So instead I tore a piece of cloth from the bottom of their pant leg.

"Tie this around my wrist" I said. "Tie it and you will always be with me."

Some time passed before we met again. When we did, my friend was curious about the piece of cloth.

"Do you still have the band I tied to you?"

"Indeed I do, are you ready to have it back?"

"No, I don't need it. As long as you've had it I've been fine. You can keep it."

"Well in that case, I'm cutting it off. "

"NO!" my friend said "You can't cut it off! It's special, it's what keeps us together!"

"It's been a long while since we've seen each other" I said. "This cloth has not kept us together and you have been fine. Now that this new bond is threatened you are getting upset all over again! It has become a problem and we must fix it. "

"Well how do we fix it if you're just leaving again?"

"My leaving is not the problem. I have left before and you were ok. The knot you tied has created the problem. I'm the one wearing the cloth, but you are the one attached to it. "

My friend continued to look at me without saying a word. Reluctantly, a hand reached over, and then another, and they began fumbling with the knot.

"To undo a knot you must understand how it was tied in the first place."

My friend continued to work on the knot.

"It's the same with every problem. You must first understand how you got there. From then on you can work backwards. If you entered through the front door, there is no reason to exit through a window."
